Since All Things Ordinary #1 was all about the last month I spent in Buffalo, NY, issue #2 is a collection of some things that I experienced in the first few months living in Portland, OR. Everything from donating plasma, getting a job at a food cart, and the fun times I had at the 2009 Portland Zine Symposium.

All Things Ordinary #3

I created this zine at Portland’s 2nd Annual 24 Hour Zine Challenge. This zine was made between 10:00am July 24th and 10:00am July 25th, 2010. It is all about notable shows and concerts I have been to over the years. Seeing bands I never thought I’d have the chance to, singers attacking me, pepper spray, stage dives, and so much more.

ATO #1 Review in Maximum RocknRoll

These days, there aren’t many places to send your zine for review. The most well known (and the longest running) is Maximum Rocknroll. I’ve usually had good luck with reviews in MRR, and this was no exception. Here is a picture of the review of All Things Ordinary #1 as it appeared in issue #324. If i feel ambitious down the road i may type it up.

Edit: here is the review as i retyped it:

“This perzine is all about one man’s shocking decision to do something he thought was always for suckers- move to Portland. He describes his solemn final days in Buffalo, NY. It’s cute as hell. He sells his bike he loves so much, does laundry at the terrifying place with the horrible woman, eats stupid amounts of greasy vegetarian food at the local spot. He waxes about how different it will be to be the new guy who is capable of anything in a new town after being so entrenched in the scene in Buffalo and losing sight oh whether he actually likes all the bands he sees all the time or just loves his friends and everything they do is precious. For some reason, I kept thinking the author must be female while I was reading it, but it’s actually this lovely sentimental fellow, Derek. How does the bumper sticker go? Question reality, doggies.”

In other zine related news, i currently have writers block so i’m stuck at 19 pages still. I did however get a sneak peak at the cover which is being drawn by a friend of mine and it looks really awesome! I can’t wait to see the final product.

Daft Punk’s Electroma

Very rarely do i call something the best thing ever. I often eat great food or listen to amazing music but i don’t recall ever claiming one thing as “the best”. This being said, i can confidently say that i just watched the best movie i have ever seen. I went into Electroma (directed by Daft Punk) thinking it would be an entertaining watch because they are known for having good music videos and i previously enjoyed their other movie Interstella 5555. I was not expecting to be blown away like i was. As i sat in my living room, i could not believe how perfect the movie was. At first i wondered if it was just me but then as the credits were rolling for a few minutes, my housemates and i finally started talking about how incredible what we just watched was. The three of us were literally speechless. After doing some reading about the movie, i read that people have sync’d Daft Punk- “Human After All” to the movie and it works really well. I can’t wait to try it out.

Chicago Zine Fest 2010

I’m really bummed i’m not going to be able make it, but if anyone can they should go to the first Chicago Zine Fest March 12-13. John Porcellino and Jeffrey Brown both signed on to do workshops and the reading. I’m sure there will be more announcements as the fest draws closer.

ATO #1 Now Available at Quimby’s

The first time i went to Chicago, my friend Marc Moscato told me to check out a really cool zine shop called Quimby’s. I followed his advice and i definitely wasn’t disappointed. I had never seen so many zines in a store before and definitely spent more than i should have there. Fast forward 5 years and now one of my zines is available on the shelves and online at Quimby’s. Here is what they had to say about it:

Talk about a pre-emptive strike! Instead of moving to Portland and then writing a zine about moving, Derek did it all out of order and wrote the perzine in Buffalo before moving to Portland. Welcome home, man.

Zine in Progress: All Things Ordinary #2 (part 2)

My housemate James and i had another zine making night tonight. We got off to a late start because he overslept, but we worked on our individual zines for a good 3-4 hours. I can’t speak for him, but tonight was really productive for me. I printed and laid out two stories i had written for All Things Ordinary #2. The first was 9 pages and the 2nd ended up being 5 pages. Combined with the 5 pages i laid out during the first zine making night, ATO #2 is currently at 19 pages! In the process, i finished off two glue sticks as you can see in the photo. Now i need to write more this next week. I already have some ideas on what i’m going to write next so it shouldn’t be too hard.

I also need to buy more gluesticks!
